Staying Atop the Ladder
Now that everyone has had ample opportunity to let the Thanksgiving feast digest, it is time to get those holiday decorations out of the attic and out on display! As you get ready to hang the holiday lights and trim the tree, don’t forget to examine the most important piece of equipment needed to perform these tasks safely…your ladder!
According to the World Health Organization, “the United States leads the world in ladder deaths. Each year, there are more than 164,000 emergency room-treated injuries and 300 deaths in the U.S. that are caused by falls from ladders.” Another shocking fact is that, “most ladder deaths are from falls 10 feet or less”. To prevent any such injury or catastrophic event, please keep these following safety guidelines in mind!
1. Examine the ladder prior to use for any defaults, defects, or damage.
• Do not use if such things are found.
2. Select a ladder of appropriate type and height for the job.
• Extension ladders should extend at least 3 feet above the support point
3. Remember the 4-to-1 rule.
• For every 4 feet of elevation, place the base of the ladder 1 foot away from the wall.
4. Place the ladder on a firm, level surface.
5. Always face the ladder while ascending or descending the ladder and use 3 points of contact.
6. Do not stand or sit on the top two steps.
• These are meant for structure related purposes.
7. Don’t over-reach. Get down and move the ladder as needed.
